Story

Nokiusz is a small, bearded dwarf in a floppy cap who stands beside a lattice of metal bars in front of a glass office building. In the photo he looks to the side with a shy, slightly worried expression and holds on to the metalwork with one hand, as if he were not sure about the big glass doors behind him. A doormat with ridged metal strips lies at his feet.

History & Significance

According to wromap.pl, Nokiusz was made by Piotr Makała and appeared on 2 June 2017 at West Gate, ul. Lotnicza 12. West Gate is an office building at the junction of Lotnicza and Na Ostatnim Groszu streets. Wrocław's dwarfs grew out of the Orange Alternative, a playful protest movement of the 1980s whose members painted dwarfs on city walls; the first bronze dwarf was placed on ul. Świdnicka in 2001, and hundreds have followed since. We found no source that says who commissioned Nokiusz or what his name refers to.

Inspiration

His name sounds like a company or brand name, but we found no source that links it to a tenant of West Gate, so we do not claim a sponsor. What is visible is a modest dwarf at the entrance of an office complex.
