Story

Dolmedzik has a kind, crinkly-eyed face and he is not alone: the other member of his group, Dolmedzio, stands right beside him, and you can see the edge of another figure at the left of the photo. Dolmedzik wears a pointed cap and a short beard, and a thin loop of wire or tubing curls from beside his ear, which might be a stethoscope but the close-up does not settle it. The pair stand at Legnicka 40 in Szczepin, about 2.0 km west of the Market Square, in front of a wooden panel wall.

History & Significance

Wrocław's bronze dwarfs grew out of the Orange Alternative, a playful, non-violent protest movement of the 1980s whose members painted dwarfs on city walls. Since 2005 the city has filled its streets with bronze dwarfs, and there are now hundreds of them. According to wromap.pl, Dolmedzik belongs to a group called Dolmedzik i Dolmedzio, was made by Marlena Zakrzewska and stands at Legnicka 40. A clinic directory lists the medical centre Dolnośląskie Centrum Medyczne DOLMED at Legnicka 40, and the dwarf's name echoes it, but I found no source that states the link or gives an unveiling date or sponsor.

Inspiration

No source I found explains the idea behind Dolmedzik. His name echoes DOLMED, the medical centre a clinic directory lists at the same address, and the thin loop beside his ear may be a stethoscope, but I found no source that confirms either point.

Fun Facts

  • wromap.pl groups him with Dolmedzio as Dolmedzik i Dolmedzio and credits the sculptor Marlena Zakrzewska.
  • A clinic directory lists the medical centre DOLMED at Legnicka 40, the same address, though I found no source that links it to the dwarf.
  • In the photo a thin loop curls from beside his ear, possibly a stethoscope.
  • Hastuś, another dwarf by the same sculptor, is only 438 m away.
  • The nearest dwarf, Narzędziownik, is 303 m away, so the pair are fairly isolated.
