Story
Dworzan 1 has been waiting for a train for a very long time. He sits on his suitcase with his head bowed and his beard resting on his chest, as if he had just worked out that the next connection is not until tomorrow. His rough, deeply textured bronze face has the patient look of someone who has seen a thousand platforms. Sit near him for a minute and see whether you can match his patience.
History & Significance
Dworzan 1 appeared on 1 June 2012 at Marszałka Józefa Piłsudskiego 105 and was made by Tomasz Moczek, who also made the first five Rynek dwarfs in 2005. Wrocław's bronze dwarfs grew out of the Orange Alternative, a playful, non-violent protest movement of the 1980s whose members painted dwarfs on city walls; since 2005 the city has been filling its streets with bronze dwarfs, and there are now hundreds of them. The other two Dworzan dwarfs, Dworzan 2 and Dworzan 3, were made by Marta Mirynowska and appeared on the same date. We found no sponsor.
Inspiration
Piłsudskiego 105 is the address of Wrocław Główny, the city's main railway station. The name Dworzan probably plays on dworzec, the Polish word for station (this is our reading, not stated in a source), and wromap.pl titles this figure "Siedzący na walizce" (sitting on a suitcase). The wromap.pl photo is a close-up of his bowed, deeply textured face, so the suitcase is not visible in it.
