Story

Dziabomir is the dwarf who never says no to a challenge. In our photo he is pressed against a red brick wall at Wojciecha Bogusławskiego 45, one fist raised high and the pointed cap pulled tight over his beard, as if he is about to grab the next hold. Dwarfs say he never climbs anything that is not at least a little bit scary, and then climbs it again, only faster.

History & Significance

Wrocław's bronze dwarfs grew out of the Orange Alternative, a peaceful, absurdist protest movement of the 1980s whose members painted dwarfs on city walls. Since 2005 the city has filled its streets with bronze dwarfs, and there are now hundreds of them. According to wromap.pl, Dziabomir was made by Marlena Zakrzewska and appeared on 1 February 2019. The city's website says he is a fan of extreme sports who is testing the ice axes he bought at the climbing shop on Bogusławskiego street. Who commissioned him is not publicly documented.

Inspiration

His name probably comes from the Polish word dziabać, to jab or peck, and the dwarf ending, and it fits the ice axes: a tool that is swung into ice. The photo shows only his raised fist and pointed cap against the brick wall, so we cannot see the axes ourselves, but the city's website describes them. A climbing shop on the same street explains the choice of spot.
