Story

Ekonomek stands in a paved courtyard at a university with benches behind him and a red-brick building in the background, his tall green-tinged cap bent over to one side. In the photo this bearded dwarf squints with a mischievous smile as if he has just spotted a bargain. He stands at the Wrocław University of Economics and Business campus, about 2.2 km south of the Market Square, though sources disagree on the exact street number.

History & Significance

Wrocław's bronze dwarfs grew out of the Orange Alternative, a playful, non-violent protest movement of the 1980s whose members painted dwarfs on city walls. Since 2005 the city has filled its streets with bronze dwarfs, and there are now hundreds of them. wromap.pl and Wikipedia both credit Beata Zwolańska-Hołod, and wromap.pl dates the dwarf to 12 May 2008. Wikipedia places him at Komandorska 118/120, in building A1 of the Wrocław University of Economics, whereas wromap.pl gives the address Kamienna 59. The coordinates in the city database lie within about 15 m of Wikipedia's position, so Komandorska 118/120 looks more likely, but I could not settle it. I found no sponsor.

Inspiration

Ekonomek's name points to economics and the university building where Wikipedia places him. No source I found explains the idea behind the dwarf himself. In the photo he is a bearded dwarf with a long bent cap, with no clear prop visible in the close-up.
