Story
Dr Auma Obama is one of the few dwarfs in Wrocław who looks like a portrait: a calm, dignified face framed by a patterned head wrap, shown as a bust against a plain grey wall. There is no pointed cap and no prop, only a steady, friendly look. She stands on Drukarska street, right beside the school with Mikołajek, so every student walking in passes her on the way.
History & Significance
wromap.pl credits the sculptor Beata Zwolańska-Hołod and gives the address as Drukarska 52, but gives no date of installation. The honoured person did visit Wrocław: Dr Auma Obama was a special guest of the Festival of Freedom on 4–5 June 2018, held for the 100th anniversary of Poland's independence. Nothing found confirms that the dwarf was made in connection with that visit. The tradition began with the Orange Alternative, a playful 1980s protest movement whose members painted dwarfs on city walls; since 2005 the city has filled its streets with bronze dwarfs, and there are now hundreds of them.
Inspiration
The dwarf is named after Dr Auma Obama, a Kenyan writer and social activist and the half-sister of former US President Barack Obama. According to the city's report she is a member of the World Future Council and works with young people across Africa. She came to Wrocław as a guest of the Festival of Freedom on 4–5 June 2018.
