Story

Ekonomik is the dwarf who counts everything twice. He is indoors at Stanisława Worcella 3, in a pointed hat with a magnificent curled moustache, one arm stretched high as if he has just spotted a bargain or a falling price. Dwarfs say he never leaves the building, because the best discounts are always found inside. Knock on the door of good sense and he will nod seriously.

History & Significance

Wrocław's bronze dwarfs grew out of the Orange Alternative, a peaceful, absurdist protest movement of the 1980s whose members painted dwarfs on city walls. Since 2005 the city has filled its streets with bronze dwarfs, and there are now hundreds of them. According to wromap.pl, Ekonomik was made by Beata Zwolańska-Hołod and appeared on 15 October 2010. The dwarf map notes that he stands inside a building, so he is not freely visible from the street. Who commissioned him is not publicly documented.

Inspiration

His name means roughly 'little economist' or 'economical one', from the Polish word for economy. The photo shows a moustached dwarf in a pointed hat with one arm raised, standing on a tiled floor next to an orange pillar. We found no source explaining why this theme was chosen or which institution is meant.
