Story
Powstaniec stands very still, in a round helmet and an open-collared shirt, and looks into the distance with a serious, hopeful face. He keeps watch in a courtyard at Komuny Paryskiej 3, in front of a turquoise wall. The dwarfs tell their young that he is proof that even the smallest figure can carry a very big memory. Walk quietly: this is a place of remembrance.
History & Significance
Wrocław's bronze dwarfs grew out of the Orange Alternative, a peaceful, absurdist protest movement of the 1980s whose members painted dwarfs on city walls. Since 2005 the city has filled its streets with bronze dwarfs, and there are now hundreds of them. According to wromap.pl, Powstaniec was made by Marlena Zakrzewska and appeared on 3 August 2025. The city's website says that the dwarf was unveiled that day in the courtyard of the tenement house at Komuny Paryskiej 3, during the concert 'Wrocław Sings with Warsaw' marking the 81st anniversary of the outbreak of the Warsaw Uprising. It was part of the 10th edition of the BohaterON campaign, organised by the Fundacja Pokolenia Kolumbów.
Inspiration
Powstaniec means 'insurgent', and the date of the unveiling points to the Warsaw Uprising of 1944. The same courtyard has a mural called 'WARSZAWIACY - POWSTAŃCY - WROCŁAWIANIE' (Varsovians - Insurgents - Wrocławians), unveiled the year before, which links the uprising to people who later lived in Wrocław. The photo shows a dwarf in a round helmet and a collared shirt.
