Story
Fatuś is a weathered, grey-green dwarf with a pointed cap, a rough beard and patches of pale blue-green patina on his nose and cap. In the photo he stands with his arms by his sides against a rough wall, next to a metal grille. His name is a nickname for FAT, the Wrocław machine-tool factory at his address, so he looks like a veteran who has watched the factory gate for years.
History & Significance
Fatuś appeared on 14 February 2012 at Grabiszyńska 281, according to wromap.pl, which names Piotr Makała and Marta Mirynowska as the sculptors; the Polish Wikipedia list gives the same two authors. Wikipedia links him to Fabryka Automatów Tokarskich (FAT), and Grabiszyńska 281 is the address of the Fabryka Automatów Tokarskich we Wrocławiu SA, a machine factory working there since 1945. Wrocław's dwarfs grew out of the Orange Alternative, a playful protest movement of the 1980s whose members painted dwarfs on city walls; the first bronze dwarf was placed on ul. Świdnicka in 2001, and hundreds have followed since.
Inspiration
Fatuś is a tribute to Fabryka Automatów Tokarskich, the Wrocław factory of lathes known by the initials FAT. The Polish Wikipedia list names the factory as the dwarf's subject, and his name is a playful diminutive of FAT. His weathered metal surface suits the industrial setting.
