Story

Tarasek looks like a dwarf who has found the perfect spot to rest. In the photo he sits back in a dark metal frame, a long beard flowing down his chest, a moustache curling at the ends and a floppy pointed cap pulled low over one eyebrow. Behind him is a glass shopfront and under him are paving blocks. He is happy to watch the passers-by of Grabiszyńska Street go about their day.

History & Significance

According to wromap.pl, Tarasek was made by Beata Zwolańska-Hołod and appeared on 15 December 2017 at Grabiszyńska 240, in the Grabiszyn-Grabiszynek area. Wrocław's dwarfs grew out of the Orange Alternative, a playful protest movement of the 1980s whose members painted dwarfs on city walls; the first bronze dwarf was placed on ul. Świdnicka in 2001, and hundreds have followed since. Grabiszyńska 240 is listed in property advertisements as the Tarasy Grabiszyńskie complex of shops and offices. No source we found says who commissioned Tarasek.

Inspiration

The name Tarasek looks like a diminutive that echoes Tarasy Grabiszyńskie, the complex at his address, but we found no source that confirms this link, so treat it as a likely guess. What the photo shows for certain is a long-bearded dwarf at ease in a metal frame, which suits a place where people sit, shop and wait.
