Story

Florek and Dekorek are a pair of working dwarfs who share one spot at ul. Giełdowa 4 in Oporów, near the office of the Lower Silesian agri-food wholesale centre. The dwarf in front wears a floppy, wide-brimmed cap and has a prominent nose and a thick moustache; the second dwarf stands just behind him, with what looks like a bucket or tub between them. Their bronze is green-brown with a weathered patina, and behind them a dark stone surface sparkles in the sun. Together they are known as the Hurtownicy, the Wholesalers.

History & Significance

Florek i Dekorek were made by sculptor Tomasz Moczek. OpenStreetMap gives 2019 as the year they appeared and records the alternative name Hurtownicy; wromap.pl gives no date. Fotopolska.eu places them at the office of the Dolnośląskie Centrum Hurtu Rolno-Spożywczego (Lower Silesian Agri-Food Wholesale Centre) on ul. Giełdowa. Wrocław's bronze dwarfs trace back to the Orange Alternative, a playful protest movement of the 1980s whose members painted dwarfs on city walls. Since the early 2000s the city has filled its streets with bronze dwarfs, and there are now hundreds of them, many in the quieter districts far from the Market Square. We found no source naming who paid for them.

Inspiration

OpenStreetMap records an inscription, Wrocławski Rynek Hurtowy (Wrocław Wholesale Market), so the pair seem to stand for the wholesale trade of the market. Their alternative name, Hurtownicy, means wholesalers. The bucket-like object between them fits the theme, but no source describes the details of the design.
