Story

Gimnazjalista (the Middle-Schooler) is a studious little dwarf who lives near the Biskupin-Sepolno district, representing the school-going generation of dwarf-kind. With a school bag on his back or a book in his hand, he looks like he is perpetually five minutes late for class but entirely unconcerned about it. According to dwarf folklore, Gimnazjalista once finished his homework so fast that he had time to explore half the city before the other dwarfs woke up.

History & Significance

The 'Gimnazjalista' name refers to a 'gimnazjum' (middle school), the intermediate educational level in the Polish school system. Several 'Gimnazjalista' dwarfs exist across Wroclaw, associated with different school buildings. The one recorded near ul. Serbska and the Biskupin district is linked to the school community in that area, approximately 560 metres from the Agorek dwarf at the Agora Cultural Centre on ul. Serbska 5a.

Inspiration

School dwarfs are a popular type of sponsored figurine in Wroclaw, because schools and parent communities can fundraise to install a dwarf as a mascot. A gymnasium or middle-school dwarf represents the pride of a local school and serves as a cheerful landmark for pupils, parents and neighbours. The Biskupin-Sepolno area has several schools, making it fertile ground for school-themed dwarfs.

Fun Facts

  • The Agora Cultural Centre on ul. Serbska 5a, near Agorek dwarf (560m away), is a community hub for the district's residents.
  • Neighbourhood dwarfs like Gimnazjalista are often the ones local children know best, even if tourists rarely seek them out.
