Story
Jedyneczka is the top pupil of Wrocław's dwarfs. She sits at the I Liceum Ogólnokształcące on Poniatowskiego Street in a round cap, with an enormous open book on her knees and a happy smile as she reads. The book's cover carries an embossed round seal. Legend among the local dwarfs says she has read it from cover to cover so many times that she can recite it backwards.
History & Significance
Jedyneczka appeared on 4 March 2022 at Księcia Józefa Poniatowskiego 9, by the I Liceum Ogólnokształcące (the citygame guide lists the location as "LO 1"). Wromap names Tomasz Moczek as the sculptor, the artist who made the first five Wrocław dwarfs in 2005. Wromap warns that access may be limited by a gate or fence. Wrocław's bronze dwarfs trace their roots to the Orange Alternative, a playful protest movement of the 1980s whose members painted dwarfs on city walls; since 2005 the city has filled its streets with bronze dwarfs, and there are now well over a thousand of them.
Inspiration
Jedyneczka plays on the Polish word jedynka, "number one", which fits a school numbered I and a top pupil with a book. The sources we found do not explain the story behind her, so we describe only what the statue shows: a girl in a cap reading a large book with a round seal on the cover.
