Story

Justa stands inside a building in Bielany Wrocławskie, just outside Wrocław, at Francuska 6, about 7.7 km from the Market Square as the crow flies. What you will see: a smiling girl dwarf in a cap with a little tuft, with a thin cable that looks like a headphone lead running down beside her ear. We describe only what the photo and the sources show - no legend is attached to this dwarf in anything we found. Take a moment to look at the small details, and if you are visiting with children, ask them what the dwarf might be thinking about. The statue is inside a building, so check that the building is open before you set off.

History & Significance

Wrocław's bronze dwarfs trace their origins to the Orange Alternative (Pomarańczowa Alternatywa), a peaceful protest movement founded in the city in 1986 by Waldemar Fydrych, whose activists painted dwarfs on walls as a form of absurdist, non-violent resistance. Since 2005 the city has filled its streets with bronze dwarfs, and there are now hundreds of them, far beyond the old centre. The sources we checked give no author and no appearance date for Justa. Who commissioned this dwarf is not documented in anything we found.

Inspiration

Justa is a girl dwarf, and wromap calls her a krasnalka. Her name is a feminine given name, and nothing we found links it to a company or a profession. No source names an author, sponsor or date, so we leave them out.

Fun Facts

  • She is one of the girl dwarfs, a "krasnalka" on wromap.
  • She shares the address Francuska 6 with Wygodek-Swobodek and, like him, stands inside a building.
  • In the photo she seems to wear headphones, with a thin cable beside her ear.
  • Wygodek-Swobodek is only 111 m away by our coordinates (wromap says 186 m).
  • Volvik is the next closest, 679 m away.

How to Find This Dwarf

Put Francuska 6 into your map app: Justa is about 7.7 km from the Market Square, so plan this as its own trip rather than a stop on the Rynek walk. Once you are there, Wygodek-Swobodek is 111 m to the east and Ajdik is 586 m to the north-east, so you can collect several dwarfs in one outing. The statue is inside a building, so check opening hours or access first. This location is outside Wrocław's city limits, so allow extra travel time.
