Story
Kaczmaruś sits in front of a school on Grochowa street, a thoughtful little dwarf with his chin resting on his fist and a mop of tousled hair. He wears a jacket and tie, as if he has just come from a meeting where somebody said something very funny and he is still thinking up the answer. Picture him greeting pupils and teachers every morning with a raised eyebrow and a joke saved for later.
History & Significance
Kaczmaruś was unveiled on 9 June 2021 during the school's celebration, and the city's own report says the figure was funded by Wrocław's mayor, Jacek Sutryk. wromap.pl credits the sculptor Beata Zwolańska-Hołod and gives the same date; the city report does not name the sculptor. The tradition began with the Orange Alternative, a playful 1980s protest movement whose members painted dwarfs on city walls; since 2005 the city has filled its streets with bronze dwarfs, and there are now hundreds of them.
Inspiration
Kaczmaruś honours Jan Kaczmarek, a Wrocław satirist and the patron of the school. He worked for many years as a journalist at Polish Radio Wrocław and co-founded the Elita cabaret. The school's director described him as an exceptional person who could appreciate small things and connected generations, which is a fitting spirit for a very small bronze figure. The dwarf's name is an affectionate short form of the surname Kaczmarek.
