Story

Karmelia is one of the Rynek's shy residents. Instead of waiting on the pavement she lives inside a building at Rynek Ratusz 27, set against a white wall. In the photo she is a dark bronze figure in a hat with a wide brim and a flowing cloak, caught in a quiet moment. Finding her is a little treasure hunt: the dwarfs on the open Rynek are easy, but Karmelia asks you to look for a door.

History & Significance

Wromap.pl lists Karmelia as a 'krasnalka' (girl dwarf) at Rynek Ratusz 27, about 57 m from the centre of the Market Square, and marks her as being inside a building. I could not find her sculptor, unveiling date or sponsor, so they are left out, and the building's opening hours are not confirmed. The tradition behind Wrocław's dwarfs began with the Orange Alternative, a playful protest movement of the 1980s whose members painted dwarfs on city walls; since 2005 the city has filled its streets with bronze dwarfs, and there are now hundreds of them.

Inspiration

The sources I found do not say what inspired Karmelia or who commissioned her, so this page does not invent a story. What the photo shows is a figure in a wide-brimmed hat and cloak, set against a white wall.
