Story

Klaunuś is a bearded bronze dwarf with tousled hair and a big round, shiny clown's nose that catches the light. His arms are thrown wide as if he has just finished a trick. Imagine him cracking jokes for the neighbours: Marzenka is 10 m north of him and Alonka 15 m southwest, so he never runs out of an audience.

History & Significance

According to wromap.pl, Klaunuś was made by Beata Zwolańska-Hołod and appeared on 2 September 2008 at Borowska 213, the address of the Jan Mikulicz-Radecki University Clinical Hospital in the Gaj district. Wrocław's dwarfs grew out of the Orange Alternative, a playful protest movement of the 1980s whose members painted dwarfs on city walls; the first bronze dwarf was placed on ul. Świdnicka in 2001, and hundreds have followed since. We found no source that says who commissioned Klaunuś or tells a story behind him.

Inspiration

His name comes from the Polish word klaun, 'clown', and the round nose in the photo shows the idea clearly. No source we found says why a clown dwarf was placed at this address, so we do not guess. He stands within 20 m of Marzenka and Alonka.
