Story
Labuś is a dwarf you look at through a window. He sits inside a building at Opolska 140, behind glass, and passers-by can see him from the street. He wears a soft pointed cap and round little glasses, has a big grin full of teeth, and rests one hand near his beard as if he is thinking something over. Behind him you can make out stacks of papers and a leafy plant, so he seems very much at home in a working office. Press your nose to the glass, say hello, and remember that he is for looking, not touching.
History & Significance
Labuś was made by sculptor Marlena Zakrzewska. The OpenStreetMap entry gives 2022 as the year he appeared; wromap.pl gives no date. Wrocław's bronze dwarfs trace back to the Orange Alternative, a playful protest movement of the 1980s whose members painted dwarfs on city walls. Since the early 2000s the city has filled its streets with bronze dwarfs, and there are now hundreds of them, many in the quieter districts far from the Market Square. We found no source naming who commissioned or paid for him.
Inspiration
No source we found explains the idea behind Labuś. What the statue itself shows is a cheerful, bespectacled dwarf with a hand raised to his beard, which gives him the look of a thoughtful clerk or reader. His name is not explained anywhere we could find, so we do not guess at its meaning.
