Story
Tharcik Mechanik stands outside a bright yellow-and-brick building in Księże, on the far south-eastern edge of the city, at ul. Leona Popielskiego 7. He wears a pointed cap with a small brim, has a bushy beard and a broad, cheerful grin, and he holds a small rectangular object up beside his head that looks very much like a phone. It is easy to imagine a busy mechanic taking a quick call between jobs. This is a dwarf for explorers who like to go beyond the Market Square: a short, friendly stop in an everyday working street where bronze is the last thing you expect to find.
History & Significance
Tharcik Mechanik was made by sculptor Grzegorz Łagowski and appeared on 15 March 2017; wromap.pl and the OpenStreetMap entry give the same author and date. Wrocław's bronze dwarfs trace back to the Orange Alternative, a playful protest movement of the 1980s whose members painted dwarfs on city walls. Since the early 2000s the city has filled its streets with bronze dwarfs, and there are now hundreds of them, many in the quieter districts far from the Market Square. No source we found says who paid for or commissioned this particular dwarf.
Inspiration
Fotopolska.eu places the dwarf at a tyre wholesaler, Hurtownia ogumienia THART, on ul. Popielskiego, and his name looks like a playful echo of that company name with a diminutive ending. The mechanic's cap and the phone-like object fit the trade setting, but no source explains the design, so treat the link as a likely hint rather than a confirmed fact.
