Story

Literatek, also called Polonicus, is a dreamy bookworm of a dwarf. In the photo he has his eyes closed and a contented smile under a moustache, a little silver snail sits on the tip of his cap, and a dark box or book stands beside him. He is a good fit for the University of Wrocław, at plac Uniwersytecki 1, and the scholarly dwarfs Profesor and Kirklandysta are 79 and 82 m to his west.

History & Significance

Wromap.pl lists Literatek (alternative name Literatek vel Polonicus) at plac Uniwersytecki 1, made by Beata Zwolańska-Hołod, with the date 17 December 2020. The Polish Wikipedia list names Beata Zwolańska-Hołod and also Sebastian Obst as authors and the University of Wrocław as the place; the two sources differ on whether Sebastian Obst took part. Wrocław's bronze dwarfs grew out of the Orange Alternative, a playful anti-communist protest movement of the 1980s whose members painted dwarfs on city walls. The first bronze dwarf, Papa Krasnal, was unveiled in 2001, and in 2005 the city commissioned sculptor Tomasz Moczek to make five more, which started the collection that now numbers well over 800.

Inspiration

The name joins 'literat' (a man of letters) with the dwarf ending -ek, and the alternative name Polonicus points to Polish studies, a subject taught at the University; no source states this link, so it is an inference. The snail on his cap is a detail from the photo.
