Story

Łukasz i Jaś are two dwarfs, Jaś and Łukasz, who share one entry. The photo shows a dwarf with a cap pulled low over his brow, a long flowing beard and a calm, serious look, standing near a blue-framed window and a red brick wall. Imagine the two friends arguing cheerfully over whose turn it is to guard the door.

History & Significance

wromap.pl lists Łukasz i Jaś as a group of two dwarfs, Jaś and Łukasz, at Borowska 213, the address of the Jan Mikulicz-Radecki University Clinical Hospital. It names no sculptor and gives no appearance date. Wrocław's dwarfs grew out of the Orange Alternative, a playful protest movement of the 1980s whose members painted dwarfs on city walls; the first bronze dwarf was placed on ul. Świdnicka in 2001, and hundreds have followed since. We found no source that explains who commissioned them or whom they portray.

Inspiration

No source we found says why Łukasz i Jaś were placed at this address or whom they stand for, so we describe only what is visible. Both names are common Polish boys' names, Łukasz and Jaś, the latter a pet form of Jan.
