Story

Mikołaj Ziółko has been wandering Świętego Mikołaja Street for so long that the cobblestones know his footsteps. He carries a bundle over his shoulder and walks with the calm of someone who has never been in a hurry. Legend says that a sprig from his bundle brings luck to anyone who greets him by his full name.

History & Significance

Mikołaj Ziółko is listed on wromap.pl at Świętego Mikołaja 65/68 and credited to Tomasz Moczek; it dates him to 5 December 2009 and also gives the alternative name Ziółek. I found no second source for the author or date. Wrocław's bronze dwarfs grew out of the Orange Alternative, a playful anti-communist protest movement: on the nights of 30 and 31 August 1982 Waldemar 'Major' Fydrych painted the first dwarfs on walls in Sępolno and Biskupin. The first bronze dwarf, Papa Krasnal, was unveiled in 2001 on ul. Kazimierza Wielkiego, and in 2005 the city commissioned Tomasz Moczek to make five more, which started the collection.

Inspiration

His first name matches the street, ul. Świętego Mikołaja (St Nicholas Street), and 'ziółko' is a diminutive of the Polish word for an herb. In the photo he wears a rounded cap and carries what looks like a leafy bundle, now covered in green patina. I found no source confirming what the bundle is or who commissioned him, so the herb reading is only my interpretation of the photo.
