Story
Silesiusz lives on plac Grunwaldzki, about 1.7 km east of the Market Square, among the university buildings. The photo shows a bearded dwarf with a pointed cap whose tip glows a little reddish, crouched low and looking up from pavement level as if he has just spotted something interesting. His name sounds like a Latin version of Silesia, the region Wrocław belongs to, so it is easy to imagine him as a proud local scholar. Get down to his level and look him in the eye.
History & Significance
Wrocław's bronze dwarfs grew out of the Orange Alternative, a playful, non-violent protest movement of the 1980s whose members painted dwarfs on city walls. Since 2005 the city has filled its streets with bronze dwarfs, and there are now hundreds of them. According to wromap.pl, Silesiusz was made by Marlena Zakrzewska and appeared on 30 October 2017 at plac Grunwaldzki 8. wromap.pl also lists a second dwarf called Silesiusz II at Dworcowa 33/35, by the same sculptor. I found no other source for these dates, and none that names a sponsor.
Inspiration
His name looks like a Latinised form of Silesia (Śląsk in Polish), the historic region around Wrocław, and the same sculptor made a Silesiusz II elsewhere in town. The sources I checked do not say what he is meant to commemorate, so treat the Silesia link as a reading of the name.
