Story

Najprzedszkolak stands in Maślice, in the north-west of Wrocław, at Maślicka 148, about 8.5 km from the Market Square as the crow flies. What you will see: a cheerful child-like dwarf in a cap and bib overalls with both hands raised to hold up a sign, standing in front of a red brick wall; the sign reads, in part, "...ZKOLAK". We describe only what the photo and the sources show - no legend is attached to this dwarf in anything we found. Take a moment to look at the small details, and if you are visiting with children, ask them what the dwarf might be thinking about.

History & Significance

Wrocław's bronze dwarfs trace their origins to the Orange Alternative (Pomarańczowa Alternatywa), a peaceful protest movement founded in the city in 1986 by Waldemar Fydrych, whose activists painted dwarfs on walls as a form of absurdist, non-violent resistance. Since 2005 the city has filled its streets with bronze dwarfs, and there are now hundreds of them, far beyond the old centre. The sources we checked give no author and no appearance date for Najprzedszkolak. Who commissioned this dwarf is not documented in anything we found.

Inspiration

The name joins "naj-" (the most, the best) with "przedszkolak" (a preschooler), so he is the "best preschooler". Wromap spells his name Najprzeszkolak, which looks like a typo, and the sign in the photo is cut off. No source we found names the preschool or the sponsor.

Fun Facts

  • His name means "the best preschooler".

  • He holds up a sign with both hands.
  • Wromap lists Maślicka 148, 54-107 Wrocław, and warns that access may be restricted by a gate or fence.
  • Maślarz is the nearest dwarf, 505 m away.

How to Find This Dwarf

Put Maślicka 148 into your map app: Najprzedszkolak is about 8.5 km from the Market Square, so plan this as its own trip rather than a stop on the Rynek walk.
