Story
Drimuś looks like a wise old traveller. He has a deep, swirling beard that sweeps across his chest, a broad soft hat pulled over his ears and a long, knotted staff gripped in one hand, while the other hand is raised. He stands on grey ground in front of a window at al. Śląska 1, close to the stadium, and anyone who loves wizards and wanderers will like his storybook look. Take your time with the beard: every strand is carved in the bronze.
History & Significance
Drimuś was made by sculptor Piotr Makała and appeared on 1 June 2018, according to wromap.pl; OpenStreetMap gives June 2018. Wrocław's bronze dwarfs trace back to the Orange Alternative, a playful protest movement of the 1980s whose members painted dwarfs on city walls. Since the early 2000s the city has filled its streets with bronze dwarfs, and there are now hundreds of them, many in the quieter districts far from the Market Square. We found no source naming who commissioned him.
Inspiration
No source we found explains the idea behind Drimuś or his name. The statue shows a bearded dwarf with a staff and a wide hat, which gives him the look of a wanderer or storybook sage, but this is our reading of the statue rather than a documented intention.
