Story

Parostatek is a little captain at the helm. He grips a big ship's wheel with both hands, and in the photo the river Oder flows right behind him, so he looks ready to steer straight out onto the water. Stand behind him, grab an imaginary wheel and shout 'full steam ahead'!

History & Significance

wromap.pl places Parostatek at Świętej Jadwigi 15 and names Tomasz Moczek, the sculptor of the first official bronze dwarfs, as his author. We did not find an appearance date or a sponsor. Wrocław's dwarfs trace back to the Orange Alternative, a playful, peaceful protest movement of the 1980s whose members painted dwarfs on city walls; since 2005 the city has filled its streets with bronze dwarfs, and there are now hundreds of them.

Inspiration

Parostatek is the Polish word for a steamboat, and the dwarf holds a ship's wheel beside the river. We found no source naming a particular boat or company behind him, so the page does not claim one.
