Story

Piątuś is a cheerful, child-faced dwarf with a big smile, crouched forward with a floppy pointed cap and one hand stretched out as if he is just about to wave you over. He lives at ul. Dźwirzyńska 3 in the Kuźniki district, on a pale stone base in front of a window, and he is not alone: wromap.pl describes the group as Piątuś and three little ones, named Maluch I, II and III. Bring the youngest members of your family, because this group of small dwarfs is made for being found by small people.

History & Significance

Piątuś and the little ones were made by sculptor Beata Zwolańska-Hołod and appeared on 6 October 2022, according to wromap.pl and OpenStreetMap. The OpenStreetMap entry also records the inscription Wrocławskie opowieści (Wrocław Stories) for the artwork, but we found no source explaining it. Wrocław's bronze dwarfs trace back to the Orange Alternative, a playful protest movement of the 1980s whose members painted dwarfs on city walls. Since the early 2000s the city has filled its streets with bronze dwarfs, and there are now hundreds of them, many in the quieter districts far from the Market Square. No source we found names who commissioned the group.

Inspiration

No source we found explains the idea behind Piątuś. The name suggests that he is a fifth member of a set (piąty means fifth in Polish), and wromap.pl lists three little dwarfs with him, but we found nothing that confirms what the number refers to, so we leave it as an observation. The statue itself shows a happy, youthful dwarf.
