Story
Powerek is the party dwarf of the Market Square, and he arrives with a trumpet, a bunch of balloons and the biggest glasses in town. He sits on a balloon horse at the corner of the Rynek and Plac Solny, near Plac Solny 20, and legend says he cannot walk past a celebration without joining in. His head is full of ideas and his optimism is simply unstoppable. On a sunny day the bright balloons make him look as if he is about to float away, so hold on to your hat.
History & Significance
Powerek was unveiled on Tuesday 19 December 2017 at 14:00, when he emerged from under a blue curtain. He was made by sculptor Beata Zwolańska-Hołod, who has created well over a hundred Wrocław dwarfs. He was a gift to the city from the event agency PowerEvents, made for the company's 10th anniversary. He stands at the corner of the Rynek and Plac Solny, listed on wromap.pl as Plac Solny 20. The tradition he belongs to began with the Orange Alternative, the 1980s protest movement that painted dwarfs on city walls.
Inspiration
Powerek represents PowerEvents, an events agency that organises parties, conferences and shows. His name comes from 'power', the English word for energy, with a Polish diminutive ending, and it fits a dwarf who spreads energy and unquenchable optimism. The agency marked its 10th anniversary by giving the city a character that looks like an event itself, with balloons, a trumpet and giant glasses. He shows how a company can leave something joyful behind on the Rynek instead of a plain advertisement.
