Story

Wypłatnik — also known to some as Bankomatnik or Rozrzutnik — is Wrocław's most financially enthusiastic dwarf, a regular at the dwarf-sized bank branch on the city's Rynek. He disappears periodically to spend what he has just withdrawn, then returns unfailingly for another round. Wrocław's dwarfs have long valued his other skill: when trouble threatens the ATM, Wypłatnik stands firm, sending the Chochlik Odrzański running and keeping the miniature cash machine safe for all who depend on it — including, now and then, a full-sized human or two.

History & Significance

Wypłatnik is positioned at the BZ WBK bank branch on Wrocław's Rynek (Market Square). He has been known by several nicknames — Bankomatnik and Rozrzutnik being the most popular alternatives — but Wypłatnik is his official name. The figure has experienced the fate of many beloved Wrocław dwarfs: he was stolen at least once, with the base damaged where the figure was torn away, but was eventually restored to his post at the tiny ATM.

Inspiration

Wypłatnik was commissioned by BZ WBK (now Santander Bank Polska) to represent its branch on the Rynek. The concept is a playful miniaturisation of banking: a dwarf-sized branch with its own tiny ATM, managed by Wypłatnik with a combination of financial enthusiasm and fierce protectiveness. The dwarf's many nicknames — Rozrzutnik ('the Spendthrift') being the most affectionate — capture the humour of the installation perfectly.

Fun Facts

  • Wypłatnik has at least three unofficial nicknames: Bankomatnik, Rozrzutnik ('the Spendthrift'), and simply 'the dwarf by the ATM'.
  • He was stolen at least once — thieves tore the figure right off its stone base — but eventually returned to his post.
  • His tiny ATM is scaled to dwarf proportions, making it one of the most photographed props on the Rynek.
  • Despite his reputation as a spendthrift, Wypłatnik is credited with protecting the human-sized cash machines nearby from the Chochlik Odrzański.
  • The Rynek location means Wypłatnik is one of the most-visited dwarfs in the entire city — hard to miss on any Market Square stroll.

How to Find This Dwarf

Head to Wrocław's main Market Square (Rynek) and look for the BZ WBK (now Santander) bank branch. Wypłatnik and his miniature ATM are right outside at pavement level — he's one of the easiest dwarfs to find in the city, right in the heart of the action. From the Rynek tram stops it is a one-minute walk.
