Story
Profesor J. Mroczka „Foton” is a learned dwarf in the Ołbin district, about 1.9 km north-east of the Market Square, and he has the air of a man who enjoys explaining things. In the photo this smiling dwarf wears rectangular glasses and a pointed cap and gazes up and to one side with a pleased expression, one arm reaching out as if about to hand something over. Imagine him halfway through a lecture, delighted that a class of passers-by has stopped to listen.
History & Significance
Wrocław's bronze dwarfs grew out of the Orange Alternative, a playful, non-violent protest movement of the 1980s whose members painted dwarfs on city walls. Since 2005 the city has filled its streets with bronze dwarfs, and there are now hundreds of them. wromap.pl gives the address Bolesława Prusa 53-55 and names no sculptor or date, and I found no other source that does. A Professor Janusz Mroczka of Wrocław University of Science and Technology exists, and PWr pages say he founded its Department of Electronic and Photonic Metrology in 1998, but I found no source that says the dwarf is dedicated to him.
Inspiration
The name points to a professor with the surname Mroczka and the nickname Foton (photon). A Professor Janusz Mroczka of Wrocław University of Science and Technology founded the Department of Electronic and Photonic Metrology there, which fits the nickname, but no source I found confirms that the dwarf honours him, so this is a likely reading, not a documented fact.
