Story

Olbiniusz is one of Wroclaw's most historically rooted dwarfs, standing guard at Primary School No. 107 on ul. Boleslawa Prusa 64/74 in the Olbin district. Legend tells that this little knight entered the service of the mighty 12th-century nobleman Piotr Wlostowic and has been watching over the Olbin quarter ever since. He wears the Wlostowic family crest on his chest — not because he is tall or imposing, but because he is fiercely loyal. Centuries of changing rulers have come and gone, yet Olbiniusz never abandoned his post.

History & Significance

Olbiniusz was unveiled on 2 June 2008 at School No. 107, which stands on the very foundations of an ancient abbey founded by Piotr Wlostowic in the 12th century. The project was coordinated by teacher Anna Romek and sponsored by Wroclaw Gas Works (Gazownia Wroclawska). Sculptor Beata Zwolanska-Holod created the figure, and the dwarf's name was chosen in a children's art competition with the theme 'Safety with Gas'.

Inspiration

The name 'Olbiniusz' derives from 'Olbin' — a district of Wroclaw whose name echoes the medieval village of the same name where Piotr Wlostowic established his abbey. The dwarf physically carries the Wlostowic coat of arms, connecting the school's students to a thousand years of local history. Despite his fierce knightly appearance, Olbiniusz loves children and reportedly helps teach history lessons.
