Story
Prolek is a dwarf dressed for the office. He wears a pointed hat, a jacket and tie and a long, well-combed beard, and he leans one arm on a bench-like edge as if he has paused for a chat. He stands on a grassy strip at ul. Graniczna 8 in Muchobór Wielki, with a pale building in the background. Stop for a moment and imagine what he is about to say: a gentleman in a tie is a rare sight among Wrocław's dwarfs.
History & Significance
OpenStreetMap gives 2018 as the year Prolek appeared; wromap.pl gives neither a date nor an author. Wrocław's bronze dwarfs trace back to the Orange Alternative, a playful protest movement of the 1980s whose members painted dwarfs on city walls. Since the early 2000s the city has filled its streets with bronze dwarfs, and there are now hundreds of them, many in the quieter districts far from the Market Square. We found no source naming the sculptor or who commissioned him.
Inspiration
No source we found explains the idea behind Prolek or his name. The statue shows a bearded dwarf in a jacket and tie, so he seems to represent an office worker or a businessman, but this is our reading of the statue rather than a documented intention.
