Story
"Action!" The Reżyser sits in a folding director's chair with the word REŻYSER carved on the backrest, a megaphone raised in one hand and a page of script in the other. His wide grin and curled moustache say that the scene is going perfectly. Legend among the local dwarfs has it that he calls for silence on the set each time a tourist leans in for a photo, and that he never yells "cut" until everyone has smiled.
History & Significance
The dwarf, also known as Klapsik (the Clapperboard), was unveiled on Saturday 22 June 2024 at the corner of Miernicza and Łukasińskiego streets in Przedmieście Oławskie. Wromap gives the address as Miernicza 14. The sculptor is Beata Zwolańska-Hołod. The dwarf was commissioned by film director Patryk Vega, known for the "Pitbull" and "Kobiety mafii" series, as a thank-you to residents for their cooperation while he filmed a movie on Miernicza Street the year before. The name Klapsik won a public vote that ran until 27 May. Wrocław's bronze dwarfs trace their roots to the Orange Alternative, a playful protest movement of the 1980s whose members painted dwarfs on city walls; since 2005 the city has filled its streets with bronze dwarfs, and there are now well over a thousand of them.
Inspiration
The Reżyser (Director) is a tribute to filmmaking, and in particular to the street where a film crew took over the neighbourhood for a while. The bronze folding chair, the script and the megaphone are the classic tools of a film director. The dwarf's two names show how the city works: the database lists him as Reżyser, while the winning name in the public vote was Klapsik, a nod to the clapperboard.
