Story
Siedemnastek greets every student with a raised hand, waiting for a high-five. He stands at the entrance of XVII Liceum Ogólnokształcące on Tęczowa Street, and his cheerful grin and tousled hair suit a school known for its stage competitions. Legend among the local dwarfs says he has never been left hanging: each morning at least one student slaps his bronze palm on the way to class, and on the days of the theatre contest the high-fives never stop.
History & Significance
Siedemnastek was installed at the school in late June or July 2024 and officially unveiled on 10 March 2025, at the start of the 33rd edition of "Przekręt", the school's youth stage-arts competition, with Wrocław's mayor Jacek Sutryk attending. The name was chosen by the school community. Sources differ on the makers: wromap lists Beata Zwolańska-Hołod, the city's news page does not name a sculptor, and the citygame dwarf guide says the figure was made by Beata Zwolańska-Hołod and Sasza Hołod to a design by Martyna Janda. Wrocław's bronze dwarfs trace their roots to the Orange Alternative, a playful protest movement of the 1980s whose members painted dwarfs on city walls; since 2005 the city has filled its streets with bronze dwarfs, and there are now well over a thousand of them.
Inspiration
The name Siedemnastek is a play on the school's Roman number: XVII is seventeen, and the mayor joked that the ending "17" made the name fit perfectly. The dwarf is a welcome sign for pupils and guests, and his raised hand invites a high-five. The school itself, XVII LO, is named after the poet and lyricist Agnieszka Osiecka, and it hosts the annual "Przekręt" contest.
