Story
Płucek keeps an eye on the autumn leaves from a spot in front of a red-brick building with an arched doorway. In the photo this bearded dwarf in a rounded cap looks up and away as if drawing a deep breath, with an openwork row of loops resting on top of his cap. His name echoes płuco, the Polish word for lung, and he stands at Grabiszyńska 105, about 2.1 km south-west of the Market Square, the address of the Lower Silesian Lung Disease Centre (Dolnośląskie Centrum Chorób Płuc).
History & Significance
Wrocław's bronze dwarfs grew out of the Orange Alternative, a playful, non-violent protest movement of the 1980s whose members painted dwarfs on city walls. Since 2005 the city has filled its streets with bronze dwarfs, and there are now hundreds of them. wromap.pl and Wikipedia agree that Płucek stands at Grabiszyńska 105, and Wikipedia names the Lower Silesian Lung Disease Centre as his location. They disagree on the sculptor: wromap.pl credits Bogna Kozera-Radomska, while Wikipedia's list says the author is unknown. I found no unveiling date and no sponsor.
Inspiration
Płucek's name echoes płuco, the Polish word for lung, and the address is a lung disease centre, so a link to breathing and lung health seems likely, but no source I found states it. In the photo, an openwork row of loops sits on top of his cap, and I could not tell what it represents.
