Story
Silesiusz II is the second of his name and, in his own opinion, the better one. He props both arms on the ledge in front of him, tilts his cap and grins as if he had just heard the best joke of the day. Passers-by hurry along the pavement while he watches them with the calm of someone who has all of Silesia on his side. Stop a moment and he will probably grin at you too.
History & Significance
Silesiusz II stands at Dworcowa 33/35 in the Przedmieście Świdnickie district and was made by Marlena Zakrzewska. Wrocław's bronze dwarfs grew out of the Orange Alternative, a playful, non-violent protest movement of the 1980s whose members painted dwarfs on city walls; since 2005 the city has been filling its streets with bronze dwarfs, and there are now hundreds of them. We found no installation date and no sponsor, and do not state any.
Inspiration
The name echoes Silesia, the historic region of which Wrocław is the capital; there is also a dwarf called Silesiusz (without the II) in the database, about 1730 m from this one. Beyond the name, no source we found explains the idea. The photo shows a grinning, bearded dwarf in a cap with both forearms resting forward, on a pavement beside a building.
