Story
Stefanek lives on Stacha Świstackiego, about 1.9 km south-east of the Market Square, and he does not travel alone. In the photo this bearded dwarf in a pointed cap has a dark bird perched on his shoulder, craning its head over as if whispering the day's gossip into his ear, while he grins out at the camera in the corner of a pale concrete wall. Imagine the pair sharing secrets about everyone who walks past, with the bird doing all the talking.
History & Significance
Wrocław's bronze dwarfs grew out of the Orange Alternative, a playful, non-violent protest movement of the 1980s whose members painted dwarfs on city walls. Since 2005 the city has filled its streets with bronze dwarfs, and there are now hundreds of them. According to wromap.pl, Stefanek was made by Beata Zwolańska-Hołod and appeared on 6 October 2023, at Stacha Świstackiego 10A, where it warns that access may be limited by a barrier, fence or gate. I found no second source for the date and none that names a sponsor.
Inspiration
No source I found explains the idea behind Stefanek or his bird companion. The photo shows the bird, which looks like a crow or raven, perched on his shoulder, but I cannot tell what it stands for.
