Story
Straznik — also known as Halabardnik (the Halberd Carrier) — is Wroclaw's most watchful dwarf, a bronze sentinel perched high above the entrance to the Municipal Guard headquarters, scanning the streets below with a piercing, unblinking gaze. He never leaves his post, not even for a moment, because he is convinced that the second he looks away, mischief will break out. According to dwarf lore, he once caught the culprits behind a legendary April Fool's prank in which all the city's street names were swapped overnight — a feat he still recounts with great self-satisfaction.
History & Significance
The Straznik dwarf was designed by architect Marcin Luczkowski and is one of the most distinctive figures in Wroclaw's dwarf collection due to his elevated, semi-hidden position. He was originally positioned in a niche above the entrance at ul. Sukiennice 12 (the old Municipal Guard post near the Ratusz), and was later relocated to ul. Gwarna 5/7, the current Municipal Guard headquarters. He is described on visitwroclaw.eu as an honorary member of the Municipal Guard and is closely associated with maintaining order among his fellow dwarfs.
Inspiration
The dwarf's character is a playful satire on municipal authority and vigilance. Marcin Luczkowski designed a figure who embodies a mix of pompousness and genuine dedication — always on duty, always on the lookout, and deeply convinced of his own importance. His nickname 'Halabardnik' (Halberd Carrier) evokes medieval city guards who stood watch with polearms, giving Straznik an air of comic grandeur that perfectly fits Wroclaw's irreverent dwarf tradition.
