Story

Tomografek keeps watch in the Nadodrze district, about 1.6 km north of the Market Square. He is a bearded dwarf in a soft cap with a thoughtful, slightly worried face, and in the photo he leans in beside a big round ring, rather like someone peering through the opening of a scanner. A small figure sits at the lower edge of the frame, as if waiting its turn. Imagine him as the neighbourhood's resident diagnostician, squinting at the results: his name is a diminutive of tomograf, the machine that looks inside the body, and he seems to take the job very seriously.

History & Significance

Wrocław's bronze dwarfs grew out of the Orange Alternative, a playful, non-violent protest movement of the 1980s whose members painted dwarfs on city walls. Since 2005 the city has filled its streets with bronze dwarfs, and there are now hundreds of them. Tomografek was made by Grzegorz Łagowski, according to wromap.pl, which gives his address as Ołbińska 32 (the city database has no street address for him). The sources I found do not say when he appeared or who commissioned him.

Inspiration

His name is a diminutive of tomograf, a scanner used for medical imaging, and wromap.pl also lists him under the alternative name Diagnostek, which points the same way. No source I found says which clinic, company or person inspired him, so the medical link is a reading of his name and the ring-shaped prop, not a documented dedication.
