Story
The Wolontariusze are always the first to arrive and the last to leave. One of them holds a little bronze heart high above his head, as if to show everyone how a good deed looks. Legend says that if you hold a door open for someone near them, they smile a tiny bit wider.
History & Significance
Wolontariusze (Volunteers) are listed on wromap.pl at Kazimierza Wielkiego 31-33 as a group of two, Wolontariuszka and Wolontariusz, credited to Sebastian Obst and dated 25 September 2023. I found no second source for the author or date. Wrocław's bronze dwarfs grew out of the Orange Alternative, a playful anti-communist protest movement: on the nights of 30 and 31 August 1982 Waldemar 'Major' Fydrych painted the first dwarfs on walls in Sępolno and Biskupin. The first bronze dwarf, Papa Krasnal, was unveiled in 2001 on ul. Kazimierza Wielkiego, and in 2005 the city commissioned Tomasz Moczek to make five more, which started the collection.
Inspiration
The name means volunteers. In the photo one dwarf in a cap with a pointed tip leans forward with his arms stretched wide, raising a heart-shaped object in one hand. I found no source saying which organisation or event commissioned them, so none is named here.
