Story

ZimMedka II is a girl dwarf with a mane of long wavy hair under a wide-brimmed pointed hat, and a friendly, slightly mischievous smile. She holds up a slab like a board or tablet covered in scribbles, as if she were reading out a note. She stands against a polished black granite wall, which makes her bronze glow.

History & Significance

ZimMedka II stands at al. Wiśniowa 83B in the Borek district. Wromap.pl names the sculptor as Beata Zwolańska-Hołod and calls her a 'krasnalka', a girl dwarf. The 'II' suggests a second dwarf of the same name, and wromap.pl also lists a plain ZimMedka elsewhere, but we did not check that dwarf, so we say nothing about it. No installation date was found. Wrocław's bronze dwarfs trace back to the Orange Alternative, a peaceful, absurdist protest movement founded in the city in 1986 by Waldemar Fydrych, whose members painted dwarfs on walls. Since 2005 the city has filled its streets with bronze dwarfs, and there are now hundreds of them.

Inspiration

The name 'ZimMedka' looks like a coined word, possibly tied to a company or institution - the photo shows no sign naming one, and we found no source explaining it, so we do not claim a sponsor or meaning.
