Japanese Garden

You are at the gate of the Japanese Garden, created for the Centennial Exhibition in 1913. In the 1990s gardeners from Japan helped to bring it back to life: the shore of its pond was shaped like the Japanese written word for 'friendship', and colourful koi carp swim in the water. October is the garden's most beautiful month, when the Japanese maples turn fiery red. Autumn treasure no. 3: the Red Maple Leaf. Kids' challenge: inside, leaves must stay where they fall - so collect the reddest one with your eyes or a photo. Tip: the garden is paid and open daily from 1 April to 31 October; you can check in at the gate without a ticket.
