Story
Andrzej Waligórski is a dwarf with a twinkle in his eye who sits on a windowsill at Ofiar Oświęcimskich 21, watching the street like a satirist waiting for the next joke. He honours a poet, actor and writer of witty songs and sketches who lived in Wrocław, and legend says that anyone who laughs out loud beneath his window gets a free rhyme. Look up at the sill, where he sits at ease, with a sense of humour that has not aged. The old tenement behind him once housed a café whose name played on one of the poet's sketches.
History & Significance
The dwarf was unveiled on 26 June 2022 at Ofiar Oświęcimskich 21, thirty years after the death of Andrzej Waligórski. He was made by sculptor Beata Zwolańska-Hołod. The unveiling was part of a tribute that also included a tram named after the satirist and a concert with well-known guests. The city's public transport company MPK Wrocław took part, and the poet's son Marek Waligórski was thanked for his help. Waligórski died in Wrocław in 1992, and the dwarf belongs to the tradition that began with the Orange Alternative.
Inspiration
The dwarf honours Andrzej Waligórski, a poet, actor, satirist and journalist closely associated with Wrocław, and one of the best-known writers of songs and witty texts the city has ever had. Wrocław remembers him with a tram and a dwarf. The building where the dwarf sits once housed the U Dreptaków café, whose name was a wink at one of the poet's sketches. Sitting casually on a windowsill is the perfect pose for a man who watched the world and turned it into jokes.
