Story

Szprechuś stands at ul. Ofiar Oświęcimskich 19, with one bronze fist raised and a stern, bearded face under a floppy hat. Next to him is a metal plaque with the German question 'Sprechen Sie Deutsch?', which means 'Do you speak German?'. The playful tale is that he waves his fist not out of anger but because he is eager to prove he can answer. Say a few words to him in any language, and see if he looks proud.

History & Significance

Wromap.pl credits Tomasz Moczek and gives 26 July 2019 as the date Szprechuś appeared. He stands about 3 metres from RMFek, and the two share the same address, which makes this spot a small double stop for dwarf hunters. The dwarf tradition he belongs to began with the Orange Alternative movement in the 1980s, and the first official bronze dwarfs were installed in 2005.

Inspiration

His name is a playful take on the German verb sprechen, to speak. The plaque beside him asks 'Sprechen Sie Deutsch?', so the theme is clearly language. Wrocław was the German city of Breslau until 1945, so a German-language joke has a special flavour here.

Fun Facts

  • The plaque next to him asks 'Sprechen Sie Deutsch?', which is German for 'Do you speak German?'.
  • RMFek is only about 3 metres away, so you can visit two dwarfs in one stop.
  • He appeared on 26 July 2019 and was made by Tomasz Moczek.
  • Before 1945 Wrocław was the German city of Breslau, which gives his question extra meaning.
  • Andrzej Waligórski, a dwarf named after a person, stands about 20 metres to the east.

How to Find This Dwarf

Walk south from the middle of the Market Square towards the Świdnicka end of the centre; Szprechuś is roughly 175 metres from the middle of the square. Look for ul. Ofiar Oświęcimskich 19, where he and RMFek stand within a few metres of each other. If you have already found Dziarus on Świdnicka, he is only about 80 metres away.
