Story
Solidariusz stands with his chin up and one arm raised high, a thin curved object in his hand, and a beard that swirls over his chest. His pointed hat is pushed back and his eyes look to the side as if he can hear a crowd coming. He guards the corner of Świdnicka where a plaque remembers the Solidarity movement, and he looks every inch the fighter his wromap name 'Walczący' (fighting) promises. Salute him as you pass.
History & Significance
Wromap.pl lists a 'Solidariusz Walczący (Eterek)' at Świdnicka 5, about 180 m from the centre of the Market Square, by Beata Zwolańska-Hołod. Wikipedia also credits her with 'Solidariusz Walczący' at Świdnicka 5 and describes the location as a 'Solidarność' plaque. The app calls this dwarf just 'Solidariusz'; the distances to the dwarfs around him match, so it is very probably the same figure. I could not find an unveiling date or sponsor. The tradition behind Wrocław's dwarfs began with the Orange Alternative, a playful protest movement of the 1980s whose members painted dwarfs on city walls; since 2005 the city has filled its streets with bronze dwarfs, and there are now hundreds of them.
Inspiration
The dwarf nods to Solidarność, the trade union and freedom movement of 1980s Poland, whose name appears on the plaque he stands by. The sources I found give no further story and no sponsor.
