Story

Babcia i Wnuczki is a family scene in the Przedmieście Oławskie district, about 1.6 km south-east of the Market Square. A smiling grandmother with a deeply lined face and a flat cap sits in the middle of a garden-style bench, and the grandchildren cluster around her: one girl peeks over the backrest, and another small face appears at the edge of the photo. Imagine the afternoon chatter. Grandmother has heard every story twice and is far too pleased to be sitting with her grandchildren to mind.

History & Significance

Wrocław's bronze dwarfs grew out of the Orange Alternative, a playful, non-violent protest movement of the 1980s whose members painted dwarfs on city walls. Since 2005 the city has filled its streets with bronze dwarfs, and there are now hundreds of them. wromap.pl gives the address as Walońska 15 but names no sculptor and no date for the group, and I found no other source that does. wromap.pl also lists a separate entry called Babcia at the same address, so it is unclear whether it is the same figure or a neighbouring one.

Inspiration

The sources I checked do not explain why this group was placed here. What the photo shows is a grandmother in a flat cap on a bench with the grandchildren leaning in around her, a gentle family scene rather than a tribute to a trade or a company.

Fun Facts

  • It is one of the few dwarf scenes built around a whole family, not a single figure.
  • In the photo the grandmother wears a flat cap and smiles with a face full of fine wrinkles.
  • One grandchild peeks over the back of the bench while another leans in from the side.
  • wromap.pl lists the address as Walońska 15 and also shows a separate entry called Babcia there.
  • Stylista Fryzur is only 56 m away, so you can see two dwarfs in one short walk.

How to Find This Dwarf

Look for Walońska 15 in Przedmieście Oławskie, about 1.6 km south-east of the Market Square. The group sits on a bench among greenery rather than on the pavement edge. Stylista Fryzur is 56 m west, Innowator 180 m north-east and Strażnik Miejski 213 m north-east, so a short loop picks up several dwarfs.
