Story
Boss rules Więzienna Street from his own throne, and he makes sure everyone knows it. With a goblet in one hand and a long pipe in the other, he leans back as if the whole lane were his private court. Dwarfs who walk past are said to lower their pointed hats a little - just in case.
History & Significance
Boss is listed on wromap.pl at Więzienna 6 and credited to sculptor Beata Zwolańska-Hołod, one of the most prolific dwarf makers in the city; no installation date is given there and I found no second source for the author. wromap.pl also warns that access to the spot may be restricted, for example by a gate or fence. Wrocław's bronze dwarfs grew out of the Orange Alternative, a playful anti-communist protest movement: on the nights of 30 and 31 August 1982 Waldemar 'Major' Fydrych painted the first dwarfs on walls in Sępolno and Biskupin. The first bronze dwarf, Papa Krasnal, was unveiled in 2001 on ul. Kazimierza Wielkiego, and in 2005 the city commissioned Tomasz Moczek to make five more, which started the collection.
Inspiration
The name Boss is the English word for a chief, and the figure fits it: in the photo he sits in a richly carved, throne-like armchair with a goblet in one hand and a pipe in the other. I found no source stating who commissioned him or what, if anything, he advertises.
