Story
Tralalalek and Wałałałek are two bearded dwarfs with pointed caps who live on Więzienna Street and never run out of things to say to each other. Their names sound like a song with the words forgotten, and passers-by claim that on quiet evenings you can almost hum along. Peer through the glass and see whether you can spot them smiling.
History & Significance
Tralalalek and Wałałałek are listed as two separate dwarfs on wromap.pl, both at Więzienna 21, only about 2 m apart, credited to Beata Zwolańska-Hołod and dated 18 October 2016. I found no second source for the author or date. Wrocław's bronze dwarfs grew out of the Orange Alternative, a playful anti-communist protest movement: on the nights of 30 and 31 August 1982 Waldemar 'Major' Fydrych painted the first dwarfs on walls in Sępolno and Biskupin. The first bronze dwarf, Papa Krasnal, was unveiled in 2001 on ul. Kazimierza Wielkiego, and in 2005 the city commissioned Tomasz Moczek to make five more, which started the collection.
Inspiration
The two names are rhythmic nonsense syllables, close in spirit to 'tra-la-la', and they rhyme with each other. I found no source explaining who commissioned them or what they stand for. In the photos both are bearded dwarfs with tall pointed caps and bronze noses; in the photo of Tralalalek he lifts a small object topped with painted rainbow stripes.
