Story

Wiwatek and Fanfarka are a cheering duo by the Wrocław Stadium. Wiwatek is a long-bearded dwarf who stretches a scarf marked POLSKA above his head, as if the whole stadium were singing; beside him Fanfarka, with long curly hair and a wide smile, waves one hand, the word POLSK... on her shirt. They sit on a bench-style base, and their names fit the occasion: wiwat is a cheer, and fanfara a fanfare. They make a great photo stop.

History & Significance

The OpenStreetMap entry gives 2022 as the year this pair appeared; wromap.pl gives no date. Going by wromap.pl's distances, this is the pair it lists as Wiwatek i Fanfarka II, and there are other Wiwatek and Fanfarka figures in the city, so the numbering can confuse. Wrocław's bronze dwarfs trace back to the Orange Alternative, a playful protest movement of the 1980s whose members painted dwarfs on city walls. Since the early 2000s the city has filled its streets with bronze dwarfs, and there are now hundreds of them, many in the quieter districts far from the Market Square. We found no source naming the sculptor or the sponsor of this pair.

Inspiration

The scarf marked POLSKA (Poland), the shirt lettering and the cheering poses show that the pair stands for football supporters. Wromap.pl lists the address al. Śląska 1, the same address it gives for UEFek, whom the city's news site places on the grounds of the Tarczyński Arena stadium. No source we found explains the pair's origin in detail.
