Story

Europejczyk is the dwarf who greets the whole continent. He stands next to the Hotel Europejski at Marszałka Józefa Piłsudskiego 88, in a pointed hat with a broad brim, an enormous curled moustache and a jacket with a wide collar, one arm stretched out to the side as if he is saying 'Welcome to Wrocław!' He is a small dwarf, 38 centimetres tall with his suitcase, and a very busy one: he has welcomed travellers since 21 May 2014.

History & Significance

Wrocław's bronze dwarfs grew out of the Orange Alternative, a peaceful, absurdist protest movement of the 1980s whose members painted dwarfs on city walls. Since 2005 the city has filled its streets with bronze dwarfs, and there are now hundreds of them. Europejczyk was designed and made by Beata Zwolańska-Hołod. The city's website says he was the 300th dwarf in Wrocław and was unveiled on Wednesday 21 May next to the Hotel Europejski; wromap.pl gives the date as 21 May 2014. According to the city, he is 38 centimetres tall with his suitcase and weighs 16 kilograms with his beard. He was made to welcome the tourists arriving in the city.

Inspiration

His name means 'the European', and he is a traveller who welcomes visitors, standing next to a hotel named Europejski (European). The city says the suitcase is part of the sculpture, but it is not visible in our close-up photo, which shows his hat, moustache and jacket. A traveller with a suitcase fits the idea of greeting tourists as they arrive.
